The hydration balance of the hair is the basis of hair that looks healthy and elastic. Also, it determines other attributes of the hair such as texture and manageability. However, the level of hydration depends significantly on several factors. Hair is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs and loses water molecules through the humidity of the air. The weight of water bound to hair fluctuates from approximately 10% (desert climate, dry central heat) to 30% (in tropical forests, fog or sauna). The water bound to the hair evaporates not only from the outside but also, in part, from the inside due to blow-drying, sun exposure or low humidity conditions. This reduces the moisture content of the hair. Hair loses elasticity and feels rough and dry.
Dry hair can start with a dry scalp. A hypofunctional sebaceous gland causes a lack of the protective lipid film. Thus, as hair grows, natural lipids are lost and cannot protect the delicate protein structure of the hair. Once the protective lipid film is lost, moisture cannot be retained in the hair and its tendency is to become increasingly dry.
